There are two primary methods for uploading files to your web.
If you have FrontPage2000 extensions installed to your account (installed
free), you must use FrontPage97, FrontPage98, or FrontPage2000 for uploading
all files, with the sole exception of scripts uploaded to your CGI directory,
for which you use FTP.
All non-FrontPage
users must use FTP or FTP-enabled programs to upload files. There
are many good web authoring tools which upload using FTP, such as Macromedia's
Dreamweaver, and Allaire's HomeSite. There are also good stand-alone
FTP programs which allow you to upload files generated by desktop editing
tools.
UniWeb parking
plans cannot be uploaded by the customer, as they are just parked domains.
However, if you have a parking plan and want Open Veld to configure you
a simple web page with up to 100 KB of graphics and text, on our servers,
we will do so for a small charge.
What is Microsoft FrontPage?
FrontPage
is both a WYSIWYG authoring program, a file management system, and an
upload device. By WYSIWYG, we mean that FrontPage will more-or-less
show you what your web pages will look like, as you write them ("what
you see is what you get"). In general, WYSIWYG authoring tools
are notorious for writing invalid code. FrontPage sometimes assumes
that the client doesn't know what she wants, and rewrites the code to
fit Microsoft's view of what the client must want. But WYSIWYG tools
can make life easier for a new webmaster. FrontPage gives you an
easy visual view of your folders, and allows for drag-and-drop file moves.
A kinder, gentler WYSIWYG authoring program which we recommend is Macromedia's
Dreamweaver available as a free trial version from http://www.macromedia.com/software/dreamweaver/
It uses FTP for uploading files, so you may not use it on a site with
FrontPage extensions, but it has a steeper learning curve and fewer "built-ins"
than FrontPage. Web authoring is changing rapidly, and the division
between word processing, spreadsheets, database programming, and web design
has blurred such that there are integrated suites that do all functions
in a more-or-less harmonious way. Be cautious, however, of massive
suite integration because for some tasks feature-poor tools costing $30-$80
are more reliable and work with less fuss.
What is FTP?
(See also
Configuring WS_FTP). FTP, or file
transfer protocol, is just that, a means for uploading files including
HTML web pages and images to your web site. Programs that can upload
to your site by FTP are inexpensive (less than $40) and have shareware
versions. One of the most popular FTP programs is WS_FTP Pro 6.0
available from http://ipswitch.com
It runs on Windows 95/98/NT. The shareware version runs for 30 days.
The older version WS-WS_FTP LE 5.06 is free to certain academic, U.S.
government and noncommercial home users as defined in the WS_FTP Limited
Edition End User License Agreement. It runs on Windows 3.1/95/NT.
Even if you use a high-end authoring tool such as Macromedia's Dreamweaver
for most of your file management, there are situations when it is nice
to have a stand-alone FTP program.
