How do you configure WS_FTP to upload to a web site?
 |
|
|
|
 |
|
|
Shown is WS_FTP LE; WS_FTP Pro
is similar but has more features |
 |
Establish a dial-up connection, or if you are on a network make sure that
you are on the internet. Activate WS_FTP by clicking the appropriate
shortcut on your desktop or Start menu. Click the Connect button
in the lower left-hand corner of the initial menu. A second menu entitled
"Session Profile" will appear on top of the first menu.
Entire whatever
Profile Name you want to distinguish the web site which you are uploading
(or downloading). Entire the Host Name, which is merely your domain
name and extension. For Open Veld hosted domains, the host name should
not be preceded by an "ftp." Enter your User ID and
Password. If you are using a shared computer, you should leave the
box "Save Password" unchecked. Enter your Password and click
"Ok." You should see a series of machine messages appear
in the lower left, and if a connection is established, you will see a directory
tree in the right pane, underneath "Remote System."
You can now
drill up or down in the directory tree of both your Local System and the
Remote System. If you see files that you wish to transfer from one
to the other, you will see obvious arrows which you can click to enable
the transfer. Be careful to use ASCII and not Binary as your mode
of transfer for any scripts and for HTML pages. Meanwhile, graphics must
be transferred in Binary. Also be careful in downloading and uploading
that you do not transfer in the wrong direction than you intended, or otherwise
overwrite valuable files. The WS_FTP LE version provides no warning
if you are about to overwrite another file, and the WS_FTP Pro 6.0 version
provides warning only for downloads.
Where do I obtain the remote server information
to configure the FTP session profile?
The Profile
Name is whatever you want to call it. The other information you
should have received from us as soon as your account was set up with Open
Veld. Look for an e-mail "New Web Account Established"
(see Startup for explanation
of initial e-mail messages). We included your domain name, e.g.,
widget-products-inc.com; User ID, e.g., widgec; and Password,
e.g., gfcave+tac. Where WS_FTP asks you for Host Name you
put your domain name. Initially for the Host Name, however, you
can instead use your IP address, e.g., 207.158.192.148, which we
also gave you. That's only for the first 2-5 days, when your web
account is being established, and your domain name is not yet propagated
throughout the world's domain name servers. Remember to cautiously
change the password we first gave you by going through your control panel
and choosing a strong password that you will remember. Case matters!
So be sure to permanently record your new password, either in your head
or another secure location. FrontPage users should remember that
the FrontPage password can also be changed through FrontPage, and it is
not necessarily the same as the account password that you use for FTP.
