UNIX hosting versus NT

  Startup

UNIX servers generally provide the best security and ease of configuration.  While we can provide Windows NT hosting, it is generally not the best solution.  This is explained by The Unix versus NT Organization.  For one thing, CGI perl scripts, which are an affordable method of providing interactivity, often employ some UNIX commands such as "grep" that are not available on Windows NT.  We can host your web site on our UNIX servers, and enable it with Microsoft FrontPage 2000 extensions, just the same as if it were on an NT server.
What's different about UNIX?  The most obvious thing is the case sensitivity.  If you go looking for page http://mycompany.com/INDEX.html but it's actually spelled http://mycompany.com/index.html, then you won't find anything.  The error message will say, "Not Found The requested URL /INDEX.html was not found on this server."  However, you can specify your domain name with capital or small letters, and it will still be retrievable from our servers.
What kind of plans are there?  The least expensive plan, the Personal, is a functional web hosting that provides abundant space for uploading your web pages and graphics.  It's main limitation is that although it can run several CGI scripts, which will provide interactivity, they cannot be customized.  If you want your own CGI bin where you can run all kinds of scripts, then the Professional plan is appropriate.  The bandwidth (total file transfer allotment) is generous, 4 Gigabytes per month.  Based on our experience, this can support about 2,000 web visitors per day.  Most webmasters would die for this kind of traffic.  The next higher plan, the Corporate, provides higher volume and SSL secure server, typically necessary for running secure shopping carts.  You do not need to buy your own certificate, as the RapidSite certificate is available for your use.
